President Obama Calls for Sustained Investment in Research

President Obama Calls for Sustained Investment in Research Bethesda, MD - In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama presented the nation with a new economic blueprint which includes maintaining our commitment to funding research and development that can improve our quality of life. Noting that "innovation also demands basic research," the President urged Congress not to gut investments in the nation's research budgets. He also pointed out that students come from all over the world to train at American research institutions. "Don't let other countries win the race for the future. Support the same kind of research and innovation that led to the computer chip and the internet," he stated. More...

The NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA)/ National Center for Advancing Translation Sciences (NCATS) Integration Working Group has released its recommendations. The Working Group, chaired by the Director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Stephen Katz and composed primarily of NIH IC directors and deputy directors, was formed in April of 2011 and charged with 1) reviewing the CTSA program and 2) developing strategies for its integration into NCATS.

In consultation with CTSA Investigators and National Center for Research Resources staff, the CTSA/NCATS Integration Working Group developed the following six recommendations regarding the CTSA program:

    1. Continue to provide infrastructure supporting the full spectrum of translation research while encouraging CTSA institutions to develop their unique strengths.
    2. Strengthen CTSA consortia activities.
    3. Strengthen mechanisms for enabling IC-CTSA interactions.
    4. Evaluate each institutional award on its performance and allocate funds accordingly.
    5. Allow current CTSA awardees to submit revisions to current awards prior to their anticipated renewal date.
    6. Develop an explicit process for exchanging information.
